The Chomp Files - Where To Eat,What To Eat: Mistral,Delhi

MISTRAL,DELHI
This is a review of the restaurant,Mistral. You might also like to have a look at the restaurant's lunch and dinner menus before reading the review.Simply Fahad-istic! also has their beverage and wine menus for your convenience.

"Genius!",I exclaimed cheerfully and experienced pleasure as I took another bite of the very crisp, caramelly cigarillo.Velvety smooth sweet cream filled my mouth.I then had a mouthful of the chocolate slab and as it melt my taste buds followed it with a spoon of rich creamy and milky vanilla ice cream...Dear Lord!
"This is really good!",I spoke again. This time with peaceful satisfaction.I looked at 'Traveler' Rohan ,author of partner blog ' Path Rarely Taken - The Travel Blog ',who was barely listening, busy enjoying his Souffle!
Our lunch at Mistral, the newly opened restaurant in Ambience Mall,Vasant Kunj, had been a mix of highs and lows, but desserts were certainly the best part of it.

The magnificent and stylish open kitchen(Some might argue that it cannot be called an open kitchen because of the glass wall separating it from the dining space. However, beautiful nonetheless!) where the cooking happens.Since I believe in the philosophy of "Applaud every restaurant that has an open kitchen",(Open kitchens are as much of a liability for restaurants as they are assets, according to experts.Imagine guests noticing the chef tasting every dish with the same spoon.Or worse,his/her sweat dripping into food!) I take my hat off to them!

From classic Italian Margherita Pizza to Aloo-Gobhi Paranthas, from Australian Lamb Chops to Chilean Sea Bass, from Sandwiches to Burgers - you say it,they have it!
Goes without saying, the menu is vast and diverse, the restaurant multi cuisine. The cuisines being European(Italian,French,British) and Asian(Indian,Persian) .They also have a deli and a pâtisserie/bakery section.
A multi cuisine menu,a deli,a pâtisserie - Mistral offers great variety,so much so the food choices are unlimited!

The Mistral Lemonade, the classic drink,is one of the best ways to beat Dilli ki garmi, particularly if you are a teetotaler.A soda water based beverage, the rock salt in it only makes it better.Order it with Norwegian Salmon or Chilean Sea Bass from the European grill on a hot afternoon you wish to make the most of summer!

The lemonade is certainly nice and refreshing. But is it so exceptional that they put their restaurant's name on it?Now,that's another question!

Another drink that the restaurant has its name on is Mistral's Delight.Priced at Rs. 155,it is a sweet and sour passion fruit drink.Sweetened with gomme extract(Commonly called gomme syrup) and garnished with mango wedges.

Does this one deserve a restaurant's name?It is simple,yet unique,so I say yes!

They have 3 bars - a cocktail bar,a vodka bar and a whisky bar.Not just the food choices, the drink choices are unlimited too!

The impressive wine display.
In the mood for a cocktail instead? The Cotton Club,a raspberry flavored, gin based drink offers a high.

The Focaccia, served complementary before the meal, with Garlic In Olive Oil With Herbs & Chili and Sun-dried Tomato Pesto, has all the characteristics of good bread. It is light, soft and flavorful. The quantity of herbs on top is just perfect!

Bread reminds me of cheese, which in turn brings me to the deli again. You can order a Cheese Platter from the deli,or even a cold cuts platter if you like.

If you want to pick up a quick bite,or have a cuppa before a movie at the neighboring cinema(Director's Cut) ,I recommend sitting in the outside area and ordering a snack from the pâtisserie. The range consists of cup cakes, eclairs, cake slices and tarts.Sacher Slice will specially go well with coffee.Try a quiche if you don't have a sweet tooth.

From pros,to the cons of the menu now.
While the menu is a vast one,it certainly isn't a flawless one.Foremost of them is the complete absence of Indian desserts.Imagine ending a meal of Murgh Tangri and Mutton Barra with a Crumble!Absurd,eh?
Secondly, their biggest Indian specialty,Dal Mistral,is not served for dinner.

All burgers, including this (avoidable) Mediterranean Burger come with a side of potato wedges/fries/mixed salad, green apple slaw and a dip.Even though a spicy tomato dip accompanies the Mediterranean burger, and can be easily spooned inside it,the burger is rather dry.The vegetables in the patty are so not Mediterranean as claimed by the menu!(Potatoes and peas are found the world over,no?) Also, they are so finely chopped, almost minced, that they fail to give any bite or additional texture. As for the slaw,it is unusually sweet.

Minus the emmental cheese it reminded me of the typical veg burger served at fast food restaurants. Not bad,but worth the Rs. 395 price?I think not!

When at Mistral,do try the pizzas, which are done rather well. The crust is thin, crisp and slightly browned. The tomato sauce and cheese,in appropriate quantities, complement each other.

Seafood lovers, the Seafood Pizza shown in the above picture is a good choice. Its topping, consists of mussels, prawns, scallops, clams, squid, caper and garlic chip.
Mine did not have any capers but hopefully yours would!

The service is slow. However, the lack in speed is made up by the friendliness and politeness of the staff.I also like the fact that they recommend dishes, thereby making the experience more personalized.

One of the best parts of dining experience at Mistral is the desserts!Toffee Banoffee is probably the biggest star of the menu.Layers of golden, caramelized banana slices, luscious and silky cream-filled very crisp cigarillos and chocolate. All topped with a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream and a squirt of berry sauce. What a treat!

The menu states that Toffee Banoffee contains butterscotch ice cream while mine had vanilla. However, butterscotch or no butterscotch,it is sublime!(In fact,I am sure it tastes better with vanilla than it would with butterscotch.)

Chocoholics, for you,the best way to end the meal is with a Souffle.Made with rich and intense 70% dark chocolate! The sweetness of the souffle is strongly contrasted with the tartness of coconut & lemon sorbet, its accompaniment.

If dark chocolate scares you, don't be,the Souffle has ample sweetness.
It was rightly recommended to me by the waiter.

A couple of hiccups, but overall Mistral is a pleasant restaurant.Worth an occasional visit.

The Chomp Files - Where To Eat,What To Eat: Casa Mia and The Green Vegetarian,Mussoorie

Vegetarians who like their desserts without eggs, can choose from a range of eggless, fresh, almost melt in mouth pastries at this eatery. There is Eggless Black Forest Cake Slice,Eggless Butter Scotch Pastries,Eggless Strawberry Cream Cake Slices and an eggless version of chocolate truffle pastries too!

CASA MIA,MUSSOORIE
Swearing to myself not even to think about food for next many hours,I walked on The Mall Road, back to the hotel I was staying at.The Indian dinner had me stuffed and I hoped that this after-meal walk would aid digestion.Weather was pleasant,as it usually is at this time of the year, and even though the road was crowded with tourists, their presence made me feel strangely comforted.
I saw the board that read 'Casa Mia',and my feet refused to move any further,my mind dismissing the recent decision about food. Before I knew,I was greedily ordering takeaway desserts.

Casa Mia,the little take away/bakery(Their board says Bakery,Cafe,Deli,Pizza) I fell in love with the last time I was in Mussoorie, had not changed much in the past seven years. So many years later,I still remembered their soft Chicken Sandwiches, with creamy filling. Now,not only because I have a huge sweet tooth, not only because I believe in the philosophy of “Life is uncertain.Eat dessert first.”(Thank you Ernestine Ulmer!) ,but also because I wanted to explore much more of this eatery's food this time,I was happy getting my sweet course.

An indulgent take away - Tiramisu from Casa Mia!Priced at Rs. 65,soft sponge cake is layered with luscious, sweet, creamy frosting. The coffee flavor in this Italian dessert is neither too strong, nor too weak - Just perfect!

Another take away from Casa Mia,this Fruit Cream is recommended!Fresh fruits - apple, banana, mango and papaya combined with sweetened cream and topped with a spoonful of jelly for more flavor!I guess the fruits change from season to season depending upon availability though.Priced at Rs. 60.

Apart from these two very delicious desserts, you may also like to try their Chocolate Feast,a combination of two sponges, different flavors, covered with chocolate ganache.
If there ever can be a single word to describe Casa Mia,I would say 'Variety'.They have a variety of pastries. When it comes to dry cakes, they have a variety of  muffins - Chocolate Chip,Blueberry,Raisin to name a few. When it comes to savories, they have a variety of patties.I particularly recommend the Mushroom one - hot, crisp puff pastry stuffed with sautĂ©ed mushrooms, onions and capsicum.Lip smacking! On the other hand,Cheese Patties, with meager processed cheese interior are avoidable.
Non vegetarians, the Chicken Sandwich as mentioned earlier,is a good option.
In the recent past, they have introduced shakes and Cold Coffee, but unless you are desperately thirsty, they are passable.

With this recent trip to Mussoorie,I did discover more of Casa Mia's fare. Most was good, some was not-so-good.Hungry tourists and locals are seen hogging here.Even if you are not really hungry,go,have a bite!

THE GREEN VEGETARIAN,MUSSOORIE
Probably the best part about this city's gastronomical landscape is,a lot of fine eateries are a stone's throw from each other.Begin walking from Casa Mia,and five minutes later you are at Chick Chocolate .Take a few steps further to reach The Green Vegetarian in exactly the same time.

If chaat and hot Indian snacks are what your heart desires in cool weather,The Green Vegetarian is the place for you!Do not miss their Chinese Samosa, the crust is thicker and flakier than that of conventional samosa, filled with moist, spicy mashed potatoes, green peas and cubes of soft paneer(Cottage cheese) .Served with saunth and hari chutney,it is a rich, but heavenly treat!

What can I say about a restaurant that makes every vegetarian proud and every non vegetarian believe that with food like this vegetarianism is a cake-walk?It is a foodie's delight despite being overcrowded during dinner hours!
You can go inside and have a full meal or try their sumptuous snacks standing outside - Tikki ,Veg Kabab,Veg Springroll,Sabut Dana Roll,Chinese Samosa,Kathal Pakora(Jackfruit dipped in spiced bengal gram flour batter and deep fried to make crisp on the outside, tender inside fritters.) ,Tiranga Paneer(U
nsalted fresh Indian cheese,Paneer, cooked to a tricolor preparation.) and Paneer Pakora(Unsalted fresh Indian cheese,Paneer, dipped in spiced bengal gram flour batter and deep fried to make crisp on the outside, soft, squishy inside fritters.) .

One cook prepares bhaturas(Fluffy, puffy and golden North Indian bread made with a leavened, refined flour and curd/yogurt dough. It is deep fried and almost always served with chole, the spicy, curried chickpea/garbanzo bean preparation.) while the other fries them in a large kadhai.

For breakfast, whether you have Chole Bhature or chatpate Parathe('Chatpate' means spicy,'Parathe' is plural of Paratha, the shallow fried Indian bread usually made with wheat flour and often stuffed with a variety of fillings.)
,I recommend a glass of Lassi(Sweet or salty yogurt drink) along to celebrate full Indian experience.

Even though only vegetarian,The Green Vegetarian boasts of one of the largest menus for lunch and dinner. While the night was rainy and cold,I was digging in some delicious Handi Paneer with hot,just-out-of-the-tandoor Onion Kulchas. There was Raita Boondi by the side, and some fabulous Indian Mixed Pickle. What else can one want?

Not only food, but service is one of the biggest strengths of this restaurant too!No matter how crowded, your order is delivered on the table super fast!

For a restaurant with huge menu, where every preparation tastes so good,it is difficult to pick up favorites! All I will say is,no matter what the choice, you will not go wrong!

The Green Vegetarian has to be the best eatery I visited in Mussoorie! You know, you should not be missing out on this one!

The Chomp Files - Where To Eat,What To Eat: Chick Chocolate,Mussoorie

The place was started in 1945 and is as of now,67 years old!
CHICK CHOCOLATE,MUSSOORIE
"one and only great shop of mussoorie.   - ms. Muzamil" reads the review on a pale yellow slip adorning the restaurant interiors...and this,is only one of those several positive reviews on several slips!
I was finally at Chick Chocolate,Mussoorie, the eatery I had heard quite a bit about, and with food being a disappointment(Correction: Huge disappointment!) at Hotel Green Castle, where I was staying,I was more eager than ever to find out whether the Queen Of The Hills was a culinary heaven or a gastronomic disaster.

For those of you,who were born and brought up in Mussoorie itself,I am sure Chick Chocolate needs no introduction. For the rest, this popular place is right on The Mall Road.Popular with children and youngsters, though people of all ages can be seen enjoying their food here.
Have a look at the cool decor that, along with the menu makes Chick Chocolate somewhat of a café style eatery.Apart from the menu written on the blackboard and planks(on the right side) ,they do soups, nuggets, pizzas, pastas, hot dogs, subs, and as the name suggests, gourmet chocolates!

As I waited for my order,I decided to try their gourmet chocolates, which they make in many different flavors. The staff of the place, including the owner and his family, are helpful and friendly. The chocolates are nice, though I will not go to the extent of saying that they are 'One of the best chocolate I have had',claimed by them to be a common authentic customer reaction. One of the best chocolate brownie sundaes I have had however,is their Chic-Choc! (More about it in a bit, keep reading!)
It was disappointing that my order took a while(Actually on both my visits) ,but once I dug in,I knew the wait was worth it!

Nutella Pancake at Chick Chocolate - probably the fluffiest pancake I have had in all my life!Other pancake toppings that they do are: Blueberry,Sugar,Syrup and Honey.

If you are at Chick Chocolate for breakfast, you can have a full-fledged European breakfast here. There are also Baked Beans & Cheese On Toast,Eggs(Any form) ,Pancakes and Juices.

For an additional Rs. 40,you can have a scoop of ice cream with your pancake.

Highly recommended at Chick Chocolate is Corn And Cheese Nuggets With Salad!Crisp, brown nuggets filled with sweet corn and melting cheese are served on a bed of creamy, mixed vegetable salad. The salad, consists of tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, capsicum and corn - all dressed generously in mayonnaise!

At Rs. 90,meat lovers can enjoy Mutton Burger.I suggest vegetarians to skip burgers completely, they are rather ordinary.Try a yummy pizza instead!

One product that costumers of Chick Chocolate swear by,is the pizza! With crisp crust, tomato dressing that tastes fresh and just the right quantity of cheese,veggie/meat toppings,I would prefer it to one from nearby Domino's or Nirula's any day!

My pizza had tomatoes, onions, capsicum, sweet corn and mushrooms on it!The slightly sour taste of tomato dressing contrasted with the sweetness of ketchup as I had it!
After you are done with your meal(or even if still in the middle of it!) ,the options to wash it down are amazing! You can have Coffee(Hot,Cold) ,Smoothies,Shakes(Browny,Oreo,Mars - to name a few) and Hot Chocolate.

While the pastry cabinet here is filled with mouthwatering desserts and puddings like Black Forest pastries,Apple Pie,Banofee Pie,Fruit Cream and Just Jelly, you should NOT miss Chic-Choc,the signature Chik Chocolate brownie Sundae!

A warm brownie with gooey, moist interior.Scoops of creamy vanilla and chocolate ice creams on the side. All drizzled with chocolate sauce and sprinkled with chocolate chips. Can life get any better?

I loved this brownie sundae,Chic-Choc,rightly named after the eatery! The brownie was yummy, with perfect proportions of sugar and chocolate - not sickeningly sweet, like how brownies of some places are.
If it is a rainy evening, and you are in mood for hot coffee and some reflection,I suggest Original Sin along, the chocolate dessert.

All in all,the service maybe a bit slow(Also, not to be forgotten, self service!) ,but for that good food,Chick Chocolate is one place you cannot afford to miss if you are in Mussoorie!
